What is men’s health?

Men’s health is an area of medical practice focused on addressing the health needs specific to men. Some aspects of men’s health center on reproductive health needs, but there are also overall physical and mental health needs for which men have significant risk levels.

Research shows that men are less likely than women to schedule and attend routine preventive health visits. Some even wait to see a doctor after symptoms arise, preferring to wait until symptoms become unbearable before seeking help.

Some of the health issues that can affect both women and men but remain a serious health concern for men include:

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Depression
  • Cancer
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

These and other health problems can be part of routine men’s health treatment.

What are some issues that can be addressed during men’s health visits?

Some of the health issues specific to men include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Hair loss
  • Enlarged prostate

These are just a few issues that might be addressed during your men’s health visit. Simply let Dr. Murthy know about any concerns or changes you’ve noticed since your last visit, and he can shape your visit accordingly.

Men’s hormone replacement therapy is a common treatment for hormonal imbalance. Dr. Murthy discusses the pros and cons of this therapy if this is a good fit for your needs.

What can men do to prevent common men’s health problems?

You can do many things to avoid common men’s health issues. Improving your diet is one of the best places to begin. The food you eat fuels your body at a cellular level and enhances every organ and system.

Staying active is also important. Working up a sweat and spending time outdoors can help you remain strong and healthy and reduce the risk of many types of chronic disease. Weight-bearing exercise is also essential, as losing muscle mass is more common as you age.

As you move through late middle age and beyond, your hormone production levels will naturally decline. This can cause a wide range of changes, but treatment is available. Hormone replacement therapy is a primary treatment for declining hormone production.
