What is pediatric medicine?

Pediatrics is a medical specialty focused on the health and wellness needs of children and adolescents. Children and teens undergo many physical and developmental changes during this period of time. Regular medical care and monitoring ensure your child is growing and developing normally.

Dr. Murthy has the training to prevent, diagnose, and treat conditions that affect children and teens. He focuses on your child’s whole health, not just a symptom or disease. This approach helps ensure good health and well-being they can carry into adulthood.

How often should I bring my child in for a wellness exam?

Wellness exams are an important part of your child’s health plan. How often your child comes to the office for a wellness exam may depend on your child’s age. In general, wellness exams are more frequent during the first two years of your child’s life.

Dr. Murthy may suggest monthly wellness exams up to 4 months of age and then exams every three months up to age 2. Your child may benefit from a wellness exam at 2½ years of age and then annually thereafter.

These exams are important because they monitor your child’s growth and development. When delays in growth or development are found early, it can help your child get the intervention they need to catch up.

Your child’s wellness visits also allow Dr. Murthy to assess overall health and provide treatments aimed at prevention, including updating immunizations, diet and supplement needs, and physical activity recommendations.

Does pediatric care include sick visits?

Dr. Murthy also offers pediatric care when your child is sick. Children less than a year old should be seen by Dr. Murthy whenever they have a fever or other symptoms of sickness, such as coughing, sneezing, diarrhea, or vomiting.

For children a year or older, you should contact the office if your child has:

  • Cold symptoms that last longer than a week
  • Earache
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Poor appetite
  • Unexpected rash

You should also contact the office for an evaluation if you have concerns about your child’s behavior, such as increased fussiness or excessive sleepiness.
